Immerse yourself in the history of the Great War with this authentic 2nd Class Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse). Initially instituted in 1813 by King Frederick William III of Prussia, this decoration was only re-established during periods of major conflict. The model presented here is the 1914 version, introduced by Kaiser Wilhelm II at the onset of hostilities in August 1914.
What makes this specimen truly exceptional is its original parade mount: a rigid backing covered in ribbon, reserved for dress uniforms and ceremonies. Unlike the daily wear in a buttonhole, this type of mounting testified to the special pride of the soldier who wore it.
Authenticity Details
3-piece construction: Elite craftsmanship with a blackened iron core (magnetic) encased in a nickel silver frame.
Obverse: Dominated by the imperial crown, the "W" (Wilhelm II), and the date "1914".
Reverse: Reflects the roots of the decoration: the "FW" monogram, oak leaves, and the founding date "1813". Strictly original brooch-style pin attachment.
Elite manufacturing: The cross is fixed onto a rigid mount covered in the original black and white ribbon. The reverse reveals the period label of the mounter, "Max Reich, Breslau".
The presence of the "Max Reich, Breslau" mark is a guarantee of authenticity and quality. This renowned house, specializing in military goods and medal mounting, was one of the finest suppliers of the era in Silesia. The original vermilion label provides this mount with valuable geographical and historical traceability.
The POPINCOURT Gallery's Opinion
The Combatant's Ribbon (Kämpferband)
The wide black bands bordering the white stripes clearly indicate that this Iron Cross was awarded for an act of bravery "under fire."
Not to be confused with the inverted ribbon (predominantly white), reserved for non-combatants. This detail confirms the heroic character associated with this specific piece.
The patina of the frame is original and has intentionally not been polished to preserve its historical authenticity. The magnet test confirms the iron core, an essential characteristic of genuine period strikes.
A rare and moving piece, ideal for enthusiasts of First World War military history and discerning collectors.
