Original ink and wash on art paper

This ink and wash on paper is a captivating testament to Hanna Ben-Dov's artistic maturity during the 1960s. An essential figure of the New School of Paris, the artist displays here all the sensitivity and poetry of Lyrical Abstraction.
Through a subtle play of contrasts, between the textured density of the black ink and the airy transparency of the grey washes, the composition breathes. Each gesture, both spontaneous and perfectly controlled, creates a poetic dialogue between movement and silence, void and matter. A work of great minimalist and contemplative strength, ideal for enriching the collection of a post-war art lover or for enhancing a sophisticated contemporary interior.

Historical Context: The Post-War Elite

Established in Paris since the late 1940s, Hanna Ben-Dov immediately immersed herself in the avant-garde of the era. Close to Constantin Brancusi, she fully aligned herself with the movement of the Second School of Paris, working alongside and exhibiting with major artists such as Joan Mitchell, Jean Degottex, and Zao Wou-Ki. Her ink work from the 1960s marks the pinnacle of her quest to capture the immaterial: light, air, and suspended time.

The POPINCOURT Gallery's View

"What touches us particularly about this work is the secret of its creation. Through translucency, one can discern on the back the contours of a second composition sketched and then abandoned by Hanna Ben-Dov on the reverse of the paper. As the work is presented fixed on its original historical mount, this hidden side remains inaccessible, but it gives the piece a unique depth and poetic vibration. It is the very intimacy of the 60s studio that shines through here."

Gallery Advice: This work is sold unframed (the lifestyle visuals are presentation suggestions). To respect the spirit of the School of Paris, we recommend a floating frame.
This will allow the original cardboard mount and the artist's signature to remain visible, while highlighting the magnificent fringed edges of the art paper.
