This globular lead-alloy whistle is a rare witness to Roman *instrumentum militare*. Intended for the transmission of tactical orders, this instrument was the attribute of non-commissioned and ranking officers, such as Centurions or Optios. Its density and design allowed for the emission of sound signals audible despite the noisy environment of maneuvers.

Geographical and historical context

Originating from the northern border regions of the Empire, this instrument was associated with units stationed on the Rhine Limes. This theater of operations, marked by constant tensions with Germanic peoples, required iron discipline and flawless transmission of orders, functions which this artifact precisely fulfilled.

POPINCOURT Gallery's opinion

The major characteristic of this specimen lies in its suspension ring.
Macroscopic examinations reveal a fragment of the original leather strap, preserved through a mineralization process upon contact with metallic salts.
This organic vestige, now integral to the object, confirms functional carrying (suspended from the chest or belt) and constitutes a rare occurrence in an archaeological context.
This physical link connects us directly to the centurion who wore it against his chest.
